If Lake Wallenpaupack is the heart of life in this corner of the Poconos, golf is one of its great side doors.
We’re lucky enough to call Lakeville home, and over the years I’ve had the chance to play many of the golf courses tucked into the hills, forests, and back roads surrounding the lake. These aren’t the sprawling, wide-open layouts you’ll find in warmer climates or resort corridors built for distance. Pocono golf has its own personality—and it doesn’t apologize for it.
My personal favorite? Woodloch Springs. It’s the kind of course that feels carved out of the mountains rather than dropped onto them. The conditioning is excellent, the routing is thoughtful, and the experience feels equal parts refined and rugged. It’s challenging without being punishing, scenic without being distracting, and always memorable. Even on repeat rounds, it never plays the same way twice. That said, Woodloch Springs is just one example of what makes golf around Lake Wallenpaupack special.
Most of the courses in this area share a common DNA: mountain golf at its finest. They aren’t long by modern standards, but don’t let the scorecard fool you. These courses challenge players in subtler—and often more frustrating—ways. Fairways are narrow. Landing areas demand precision. Greens are frequently small, sloped, and well-defended. Miss your spot, and recovery becomes part of the round.
Even scratch golfers will tell you: these courses don’t give much away.
You’re asked to shape shots, think strategically, and stay patient. Driver isn’t always the answer. Sometimes the smartest play is a long iron or hybrid just to stay in position. It’s old-school golf in a lot of ways, where placement matters more than power and local knowledge goes a long way.
And honestly? That’s part of the appeal.
Golf here fits the rhythm of lake life. It’s something you do when you want a change of pace—when you’ve had a full morning on the water, or when the lake is glassy but your shoulders need a break. (If such a thing as “enough of Lake Wallenpaupack” even exists.)
A quick round in the mountains. Cool air. Quiet tee boxes. The sound of a well-struck iron echoing through the trees.
