21 Things You Want to Do When Visiting Lake Wallenpaupack in the Pocono Mountain Region

Lions, Tigers & Bears….Oh My: Once, nearly 3 decades ago my parents took me to Claws “N” Paws and I remember being shocked at how many animals they support. We’ve since taken our children several times and it’s definitely worth the price of admission just to see the look of amazement in their eyes. Highly recommend making the visit.

Ice Cream: Every child deserves an ice cream cone and nothing beats a soft serve cone in the middle of those blazing summer days. Coutt’s Ice Cream opens in late April and offers premium homemade ice cream. Gresham’s Ice Cream Shoppe is a spot that is frequented; both hard and soft serve ice cream and some really great sundae’s are available. Believe it or not, you can also arrive to Gresham’s on your boat! One other place that seems to be busy all summer is The Dairy Twist.

10

Beach Time: It’s not uncommon for state parks and lakes throughout PA to have a swimming / beach section and Lake Wallenpaupack is no different. Palmyra Township Public Beach can get crowded on the long hot summer days but provides lake access and swimming to visitors. A beach at the lake offers a nice alternative to ocean beaches, plus you don’t have to worry about being eaten by sharks!

11

Boating & Kayaking: Lake Wallenpaupack is huge! The 5,700 acre lake, 13 miles long and 52 miles of shoreline. The PA Fish & Boat Commission states that the lake has no horsepower restrictions but boaters are restricted to 45 mph on weekends and holidays. Sunset to sunrise, a 25 mph speed limit is enforced. The state owns a boat launch at Mangan Cove which can be accessed for free. Brookfield owned access points can be used for a fee (Caffrey, Ironwood Point, Ledgedale & Wilsonville). Remember, you may kayak and use Personal Watercraft on the lake but do follow the rules. A state sticker for kayaks isn’t required if you don’t launch at Mangan Cove. Follow all rules and regulations when out on the water.

12

Water Sports & Towables: Lake Wallenpaupack offers all types of fun in the water. All boats used for water skiing and tubing must have an observer in addition to the driver. Boats may only tow (1) skier or (1) towable at a time and neither is allowed from sunset to sunrise. In the winter time, we’ve seen folks ice fishing, ice skating, ice surfing, ice yachting and even snowmobiling all around the lake.

13

Fishing: Like all things in PA there is a rule for that. Fishing is no different, although children (under the age of 16) have the advantage of bypassing the required fishing license. As a parent, if you are going to help your child fish on the lake, make sure you have a license! You can catch so many types of fish in Lake Wallenpaupack. #smallmouth, #largemouth, #muskie, #northernpike, #LakeTrout, #perch, #stripers, #pickerel, #catfish and so many others…Wally BITES offers a fun take on fishing our lake! So whether you have a boat, fishing from the shoreline, kayak fish, have a canoe, or simply like to get a line in the water from wherever you legally can, don’t forget to have fun and take a picture so we can see what you’ve caught.

Shopping: The basics, getting to the grocery and picking up food for the week or weekend can be tough if you are unfamiliar with the area. The two most common and easily accessible stores are IGA in Hawley and Dutch’s Market in Greentown. Looking to spend your money on something other than food? There are several antique stores, boutiques, art galleries and even a number of specialty stores in Hawley, Honesdale and surrounding areas.
