Continuing along in our Boating series, we wanted to talk about the minimum required safety equipment as per the PA Fish & Boat Commission. Whether you are new to the boating scene or an experienced caption, reviewing this list is beneficial to make sure that you are prepared if (when) you get stopped and questioned.
Safety Equipment
- Life Jacket: One USCG-approved wearable life jacket for each person on board. If you are going out with friends, take a head count before leaving and make sure you have enough coverage. Life jackets must be properly sized, serviceable (in good condition), and readily accessible. Don’t think you will get away with having 3 youth life jackets on board when you are carrying 3 full sized adults.
- Throwable Floatation Device: One throwable device must be carried on board for boats 16+ feet in length. Canoes, kayaks, and paddleboards, regardless of length, are not required to carry a throwable. Also not required for boats less than 16 feet in size. Throwables are typically ring buoys, life rings, or a buoyant seat cushion. They should be readily available.
- Sound Producing Device: A device with the means of making a sound signal audible for 1/2-mile. A whistle or horn must be readily accessible to the boat operator. An athletic coach’s whistle is even acceptable.
- Navigation Lights: Boats must use navigation lights from sunset to sunrise or during periods of reduced visibility (fog). A signal light or flashlight is acceptable for unpowered boats
- Fire Extinguisher: For boats 26 feet in length or less, at least one 5-B portable fire extinguisher is required if the boat has compartments or fixed fuel tanks. For boats 26-40 feet in length, at least two 5-B portable fire extinguishers are required (or, one 20-B). For boats 40+ feet in length, at least three 5-B portable fire extinguishers are required (or, one 5-B and 20-B). Make sure your fire extinguisher is not expired, and that the pressure gauge reading shows in the “operable” range.
From November 1st to April 30th, boaters are REQUIRED to wear life jackets on boats less than 16 feet in length. This includes paddleboards, kayaks, and canoes.
